Joe Emma

The times are changing in PCC. The period of which we spoke at the beginning of this year, has arrived.

This month Baffo will leave us officially because he will retire. After his farewell party on the 16th of September, we will come back to his retirement in greater detail in the next Albert’s Corner.

In this column, however, I would like to introduce Joe Emma more extensively to you, because after Baffo has left PCC, he will be ultimately responsible for the daily routines in our Community. An important and major task!

Many visitors to PCC or volunteers who have worked here, already know Joe Emma, because meanwhile he has been employed in this Community for 25 years!

He started his career in PCC as a caregiver and he was that good at it that a few years later he was promoted to care-coordinator. Since 2010 he has been the Care-Director of the Board of PCC.

After having finished his practical training in PCC, he completed a few training courses offered by the hospital e.g. in nursing and as a surgical assistant.

Joe Emma comes from the surroundings of Nkoranza and since his very first working day in PCC in 1999, he has been feeling a strong connection with the PCC Community and its residents.

He and his family have been living on the premises of PCC for years and that makes him very much available to whomever needs him, although he also works as a part-time surgical assistant in the hospital.

Joe Emma has a strikingly good eye for the wellbeing of our residents. Over the years and by experience he has acquired an observant eye, a wide range of knowledge and practical skills regarding the care for people with intellectual and physical disabilities.

He is also responsible for the supervision of the functioning of the caregivers in PCC and he excels in close observations.

Reason enough to be quite happy with his presence and work in PCC. However, with Baffo retiring from his work in PCC, Joe Emma will take upon him a few extra responsibilities.

He will be managing the Support Group consisting of 6 people, which will assist him with all responsibilities in PCC, whether they are care-related or not.

Joe Emma will be ultimately responsible for the daily management of PCC, which includes financial control, light and heavy maintenance plus renovations, the supervision of the Outreach work and he will be the primary contact for all external contacts in Ghana, like Social Welfare, the local and home government, churches and so on.

All in all, this is a heavy and important task. During the last 18 months Joe Emma has familiarized himself, thanks to Baffo, with a large amount of these tasks and we are fully convinced that Joe Emma will perform his new tasks with enthusiasm, skill and energy.

His love for PCC and its residents is huge and that probably is the first and foremost quality one may require from a manager of PCC:

You need to have your heart in the right place, and you need to be prepared to devote yourself entirely to the wellbeing of all these children, who were once abandoned by their parents and relatives and for whom PCC has become the most important place in the world!

Joe Emma, we wish you all the very best and much success with those new tasks which await you. And we sincerely hope, together with all who hold PCC dear:

May God bless you. May God bless PCC!
