Abel was born in December 2022 as a premature baby after a pregnancy of approximately 30 weeks.

At birth, he had several major neurological abnormalities, namely hydrocephalus and spina bifida.

He was admitted to the NICU at a hospital in Accra and later underwent surgery there, to close his spina bifida and to insert a shunt into his head to reduce the pressure on his brain caused by the excess cerebrospinal fluid.

During that period, his mother disappeared from the hospital and never returned. Apparently, she saw no future for herself with this child with all his limitations.

After being discharged from the hospital, Abel stayed at Osu Childrens Home from 2023 to 2026.

From there, he came to PCC in July 2026. Both of Abel’s legs are paralyzed, he has a squint, and he does not speak, only produces some sounds.

He has a bright look in his eyes and usually looks very happy. In a short time, he has already become very popular with the caregivers.

So, he cannot walk, but he moves himself around very skillfully with a special (lightweight) rolling plastic cart.

We believe that Abel can still make a lot of progress in his development and we will support him to the fullest extent.

Abel is very welcome at PCC, and we hope and expect that he has a bright future ahead of him here.
