High-quality physiotherapy, and all related support,
Therefore the following column concerning this vital topic and also about our dedicated physio expert Inge Maters, with thanks for her valuable input.
In the PCC – Hand in Hand Community, physiotherapy and rehabilitation are fundamental parts of daily life for many of our residents.
For children and young adults with physical disabilities, freedom of movement, stability, and physical comfort are crucial for their growth, participation, and well-being. That’s why we continue to invest in both the quality and accessibility of our rehabilitation care.
We are deeply grateful to report that over the past six months, Inge Maters was able to arrange a wonderful shipment of nearly 30 paediatric mobility devices arrived from the Netherlands and Germany.
These wheelchairs, walkers, standing frames, and walkers have been carefully matched to the individual needs of our children and now support them every day in leading a more independent and fulfilling life.
We also received another generous delivery of specialized shoes from the Wittepoel company, a long-standing partner who continues to help us by providing appropriate semi-orthopaedic footwear. These shoes make a real difference – literally and figuratively – in the daily lives of many of our children.
Physiotherapy sessions at PCC are delivered with dedication by a team of in-service trained caregivers, regularly supported and mentored by experienced Dutch rehabilitation professionals.
PCC’s Physiotherapy Experts
Inge Maters, who has been involved with PCC for many years as a physiotherapist, returns annually to support and strengthen our rehab program. This summer, she is joined by Astrid Udo, a paediatric physiotherapist from Rijndam Rehabilitation in Rotterdam.
Together, they are observing and guiding the team, introducing new interventions, and evaluating the impact of current therapies. They’re also involved in caregiver training and the development of personalized treatment plans. Their shared passion for child-centred care and their willingness to share their knowledge make their visits truly invaluable.
Looking ahead to the autumn, we’re excited to welcome another addition to our team: Herma, a retired Dutch paediatric physiotherapist with Ghanaian roots will join us for about one month, aiming to help further ensure and expand our rehabilitation program at PCC.
This support is especially important for children living outside our community – those who come to our attention through the Outreach Program.
For these children, physiotherapist Rita from the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman provides year-round continuity of care.
Collaboration with local partners – regional hospitals, physiotherapists, and orthopaedic technicians – is essential throughout the entire rehabilitation process. Only together we can offer sustainable care that fits the Ghanaian healthcare context and truly meets the needs of our children.
Thanks to these ongoing efforts, physiotherapy at PCC goes far beyond the treatment room. It is buzzing with energy, it moves on and grows with every child – on its way to a life full of potential.
